• "Wireless sensor networks in a nutshell" by Pr. Fabrice Valois, INSA Lyon, France
Since september 2008, Fabrice Valois is full professor at INSA-Lyon where he was associate professor between 2000 and 2008. In January 2000, he obtained a Ph.D. in computer sciences about Performance Evaluation of Hierarchical Cellular Networks from University of Versailles. In November 2007, he obtained the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches from University of Lyon I and INSA-Lyon about Self-organisation of multi-hop wireless networks. He gives courses mainly on wireless networks and networking. He also gives courses on performance evaluation tools. Others courses are given in the Master of Sciences MASTria about i) fundamentals tools for performance evaluation of networks and ii) autonomic networking. He launched in 2008 an international teaching program on new wireless and networking technologies in collaboration with Shanghai JiaoTong University. He is a member of the CITI laboratory and is involved in the Inria URBANET research group. His research interests are in the area of mobile ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks and wireless mesh networks. More particularly, his research works are focused on self-organisation, self-configuration, ... self-* generally speaking. He works also on MAC protocols, (zero control)-routing protocols and topology control for mutli-hop wireless networks (including WSN). Recently, he focuses a part of his work on green networking for wireless mesh networks. He has also interests about performance analysis of MAC layer for MANET using a Markov Process Algebra (PEPA) and simulation tools.

• "Energy Harvesting in Wireless Sensor Networks" by Oswald Jumira 
  Over the last decade wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become an active research topic both in academia and industry. Sensors of various types are deployed ubiquitously and pervasively in various environments such as office buildings, wildlife reserves, battle fields, mobile devices, hospitals and human bodies to accomplish high level tasks. One of the most significant benefits of sensor networks is that they extend the computation capability to physical environments where human beings cannot reach. The new paradigm of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), which refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects, relies on sensors and other devices for collection of information from the surrounding environment. A number of major research projects, publications, patents and start-ups in WSNs have been carried out, published and setup respectively across the. WSN have found commercial use in different industries which include aerospace, automotive, biomedical engineering, civil engineering, industrial manufacturing and environmental monitoring. Energy supply is one of the major constraints for wireless sensor node due to their size and nature of deployment environment. There is great need to invest in improving traditional power sources e.g. batteries, complementing them with perpetual energy supply through harvesting renewable energy and introducing power management schemes and strategies to effectively manage the limited resource. 
  
  Oswald Jumira is a PhD researcher in the MIH Electronic Media Laboratory at University of Stellenbosch, which specializes in research in the "new media" technologies. Oswald research involves integration of energy harvesting in routing for wireless sensor and actuator networks as a component of the Internet of Things paradigm. Oswald's interests include traveling, golf and technology innovations. Oswald has been a Visiting Researcher at the INRIA-Lille Lab in France and the CRG Lab at the University of Michigan, USA. Oswald holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Engineering from NUST in Zimbabwe.

• "Predator sensor net design" by JP Meijers 
  The design and building of an ad-hoc radio network that will form the technical platform of a data collection system for use in the Karoo. The collected data will mostly be photos and GPS coordinates regarding the behaviour of predators like jackals and caracals. This data will be provided to biologists to study these animals. Focus of this project will be in the finding of a suitable routing algorithm and radio frequency band to maximizing coverage, throughput and latency, while keeping the costs at a minimum.
  JP is a master's degree student at the University of Stellenbosch. His studies are in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a focus on telecommunication and ad-hoc networks.

• "Long-term deployments of communicating mobile sensors for wildlife monitoring" by Dr Antoine Gallais, LSIIT, France 
Antoine Gallais is an associate professor in computer science at University of Strasbourg, France. After a Ph.D. period (2004-2007) focusing on activity scheduling in WSN at the University of Lille1 (CNRS LIFL lab - INRIA POPS research group), he joined the University of Strasbourg (CNRS LSIIT lab - networks and protocols research group) where he is an associate professor since 2008. He had some scientific visits as a research fellow in several universities, including Inje University (Busan, Korea), Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg, France) and Keio University (Tokyo, Japan). His research interests include mobile sensor and ad hoc networks, especially focusing on an energy-efficient control of the medium access in dynamic networks. He has been involved in several international conferences and workshops (e.g. recently TPC member of AdHocNets'11-12, IEEE ISWTA'12, IEEE ISBEIA'12) and has served as an external reviewer for numerous international journals (e.g. IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine). Together with his group, he was involved in several research projects, including IRIS (All IP Networks for the FutuRe Internet of Smart Objects), DAHLIA (Experimental platform of telehomecare and remote monitoring for elderly) and the SensLAB open WSN testbed, which led to the creation of the FIT Equipex (Future Internet of Things).

• "Mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks" by Milan Erdejl
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have received a lot of attention in recent years due to their potential applications in monitoring (environmental, industrial, structural, etc.), localization and tracking. Together with the sensing and communication technology development, the mobility as a property of a sensor in WSN evolved from being considered as a drawback towards its recognition as one of the network primitives. In order to fully exploit the mobility of a sensor node, one must first understand different types of mobility, such as random, predictable and controlled, their benefits and drawbacks. In this talk we present some basic objectives and constraints for different types of WSN applications, notably coverage and QoS with the accent on sensor deployment and placement techniques. Furthermore, we analyze problems of exploration, coverage and connectivity in WSN with mobility capabilities and discuss some open issues and research directions in this field.
Milan Erdelj obtained his master's degree at the University of Novi Sad (Serbia) in 2009. In April 2010, he joined INRIA's POPS (Portable Objects Proved to be Safe) research team for the internship in the field of mobile sensor deployment for WSN. Currently, he is a PhD student in the FUN (Future Ubiquitous Networks, formerly POPS) research team under the supervision of Prof. David Simplot-Ryl and Dr. Tahiry Razafindralambo, where he works on the topic of algorithms for mobile sensor deployment.



• "Reconfigurable antennas for sensornets" by Dr Riana Geschke

• SensLAB/FIT tutorial
The SensLAB project deploys a very large scale open wireless sensor network platform. SensLAB’s main and most important goal is to offer an accurate and efficient scientific tool to help in the design, development, tuning, and experimentation of real large-scale sensor network applications. The SensLAB testbed offers today more than 1024 wireless sensor nodes, presenting different features in termes of radio, functionalities and services. It is completely open and remotely programmable.
The follows-up of SensLAB is through the FIT equipex with the extension of the current  SensLAB testbeds with other hardware nodes and mobile robots and the federation with other European platforms.
During this tutorial, you will be shown how to use the SensLAB platform and will see an overview of what SensLAB offers. You will also be given an overview of  new services that will be soon provided by FIT.
